Currently the largest portion of energy is generated from fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. These natural resources are not renewable; furthermore, as consumption is constantly growing, coal, oil and gas may eventually run out.
Fossil fuels are environmentally harmful as greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, are concentrated in the atmosphere during their consumption.
Moreover, the existing situation demonstrates that some states, particularly post-soviet countries, are strongly dependent on Russian energy resources. In the context of energy security Lithuania is one of the countries facing this unfavourable geopolitical situation.
For the reasons mentioned above renewable energy resources, such as wind, solar and hydro energy, biomass, etc., are being exploited more and more worldwide. Wind power is one of the most innovative and rapidly developing sources of renewable energy.
Wind power:
At this time renewable energy forms a significant part of developed countries' energy sector. Recognizing the advantages of renewables, such as their inexhaustibility and environmentally friendly nature, the above mentioned countries are labouring for progress and the development of renewable energy.
